Décortex by Do4Change: A Collective Approach to Information Evaluation
Décortex by Do4Change is a Chrome extension that aims to provide a democratic approach to evaluating sources of information. In a time when media outlets are taking action against fake news, this extension offers a similar but collective approach. The legitimacy of internet users rating information sources and articles collectively is seen as superior to that of a group of journalists within mainstream media. Journalists, being both judges and producers of information, may classify sources based on their own ideologies.
Décortex aims to make the classification done by users of the Do4Change social network visible. This extension allows users to see real-time ratings of websites and articles while browsing. In Facebook news feeds, each source is evaluated, providing users with information about mainstream sources, including their owners and creators.
In addition to the browser extension, Décortex also offers a web page where users can check the credibility of a source. By simply pasting the URL and validating, users can obtain information about the media and find alternative sources.
Some of the information displayed to describe websites, such as owners and links to other media, comes from the media analysis association "ACRIMED".
